24 October 2024 (Leyte) – The National Amnesty Commission (NAC), in collaboration with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU), joined the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) in Abuyog, Leyte, to commemorate the 30th National Correctional Consciousness Week under the theme, “Repormasyong Makabago sa Paglayang Makatao, Bagong BuCor, Pilipinas ay Matatamo” (“Modern Reform for Humane Liberation, a New BuCor for a Better Philippines”).

The event began with opening remarks from Corrections Officer Elmer Belleza, Chief of the Legal Service Office, who welcomed participants and highlighted that the goal of the activity was to provide legal aid and services to Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs).

Following the opening, Atty. Vevelyn O. Monsanto from the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) delivered a message outlining the activity’s primary objective: to extend legal assistance to elderly and terminally ill PDLs. She emphasized the significance of collaborative partnerships across agencies to ensure the delivery of effective legal services for PDLs.

Atty. Ma. Victoria Cardona from the NAC introduced the Amnesty Program and clarified that NAC will accept applications only from four groups granted amnesty by the President, including the former rebels (FRs) of Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF). Atty. Cardona explained that the program offers FRs the chance to reintegrate and live productive lives. She also committed to holding regular coordination meetings with BuCor to initiate the application processing for the amnesty program.

The event concluded with words of gratitude and closing remarks from Chief Inspector Josemarie D. Alambro and Chief Inspector Edgardo G. Reas. They expressed appreciation to PAO for its unwavering support and looked forward to a new partnership with NAC through the Amnesty Program.
